Just a month ago, Baselworld was in full swing. What’s the latest buzz? Which trends are emerging? And which are here to stay? HH Journal has its ear to social media…

From reissues of classic models to the launch of fashionable cutting-edge pieces, this year we have very much been spoilt for choice.

With months or possibly years going into the design and intrinsic construction of these timepieces, we shouldn’t observe them as merely capitalising on emerging fads or fashion styles, but as a reflection on trends that have slowly developed over the years and a predication about what tomorrow’s watch buyer may desire.

Using a database of 2000+ digital sources specialising in luxury and watches, RE-UP has captured and analysed thousands of conversations related to Baselworld. To calculate the data for the graphs, RE-UP measured the percentage of conversations mentioning watch straps at Baselworld penetrated by the most popular colours, designs and materials. Conversation have been split for both During Baselworld (17th March - 24th March) and Post Baselworld (25th March - 13th April).
You can Never go Wrong with a Little Black Watch

It is common ground for a watch to feature black somewhere within the design – whether it’s the strap, bezel or even dial.

However as illustrated at this year’s Baselworld, going all-black is certainly on trend – particularly for the sportier models.

Take for instance Tag Heuer’s reissue of The Heuer Monza. Inspired by the 1976 version, the new model is a testament to the classic, embracing that same all-matt black colour which made the 70s piece the iconic figure in the Monza range.

Then there’s Hublot’s Big Bang Unico Sapphire All Black, a model launched this year to celebrate their All Black concept which debuted a decade ago. For many, this was one of the standout pieces at Baselworld, with the openness of the mechanics somewhat juxtaposed against its mysterious blackness.

With Breitling’s Superocean Héritage Chronoworks and Avenger Hurricane also embracing the all-black style in their macho designs, it just goes to show that black remains an undeniably cool fashion statement.

Bigger isn’t always better

The introduction of some highly desirable 36-39mm models, which fit smoothly under the cuff, is reflecting how many a modern watch wearer is preferring the subtler approach to sizing, only allowing others a quick glimpse of their luxury pieces.

One of the standout watches at Baselworld that embraced sizing-down, was one of Tudor’s new Heritage Black Bay’s, which at 36mm was stimulating to male and female watch enthusiasts alike.
Looking good on either a stainless steel bracelet or a lightly distressed beige leather strap, the 36mm preserved the simple yet stylish design of the popular larger version, maintaining its masculine qualities but in a more delicate manner.

A Sophisticated Glamour for Women’s Watches

While diamonds may still be a girl’s best friend, many female watch enthusiasts are now looking for subtler sense of glamour – something which suits the office space, but can still look fabulous when you hit the dancefloor.

Patek Phillipe answered these desires with their new immaculate Calatrava Timeless White, featuring a clean white dial with injections of diamonds around the bezel and hour markers.
Elsewhere Zenith kept it simply elegant with their Elite Lady Moon Phase, with its ultra-thin pebble-shaped 36mm case and pure mother-of-pearl dial surrounded by a diamond-set bezel.

Alternatively, Longines kept it fun and colourful by introducing pink and blue models of The La Grande Classique de Longines – very much in keeping with Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity.

Looking Classy with a Brown Leather Strap

When you’re looking to pull off the smart casual look, the brown leather strap is a classic choice (particularly if you’re looking to compliment it with a brown belt and oxford shoes).

At Baselworld this year, many of the slim classy watches were seen to be fashioned with a brown leather, alligator strap.

From the Arnold & Son UTTE Skeleton to Hermès’ Slim d’Hermès, to the Bremont Regatta AC.

All these watches showcased how the simple addition of an alligator strap can enhance the sophisticated design of the model, while allowing the wearer to look effortlessly stylish as they pair it up with the rest of their outfit.
