Watches & Wonders has travelled to Sanya, a resort on Hainan island where, after Shanghai, the exhibiting brands are again presenting their major releases for the year, including some new reveals.

After Shanghai and until end October, Watches & Wonders takes up residence inside the world’s biggest duty free shopping mall, the Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex which is managed by the China Duty Free Group, partner to the event. The brands exhibiting at both these stopovers in China have come with their major new releases for the year, as well as a number of watches made especially for Watches & Wonders’ double date with the Chinese public.

A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Rattrapante honeygold - Homage to F. A. Lange

In China, A. Lange & Söhne introduced three new models to the 1815 collection. All limited editions, they honour Ferdinand Adolf Lange who opened his manufactory in Glashütte 175 years ago and, in doing so, laid the foundations for watchmaking in the Saxon town. These three commemorative timepieces are cased in honey gold, with special movement engraving and original dials. Shown here, the 1815 Rattrapante split-seconds chronograph, limited to 100 pieces.

Pasha de Cartier Skeleton

Headlining at the Parisian house this year, the robust yet elegant Pasha is the star of a new campaign, aimed squarely at millennials and fronted by a bevy of young talent that includes Rami Malek, Troye Sivan and Maisie Williams. A watch of great character, with options for personalisation, the Skeleton version in steel emphasises its mechanical temperament.

Hermès Arceau Lift Tourbillon Répétition Minutes

Proposed as two unique pieces, one in rose gold and one in white gold, the Arceau Lift tourbillon minute repeater reveals the intricacy of its repeater mechanism with double gongs through a cut-out, shaped like a horse’s head, in the lacquered dial in white or deep blue. Tucked against the horse’s neck is the tourbillon whose cage forms a symbolic double H.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Memovox Timer

A throwback to the much-feted alarm watch that Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced in 1950, the Master Control Memovox Timer is powered by Calibre 956 – a movement that debuted in 2008 and derives from the original Memovox movement. The alarm can be used conventionally or as a timer, with both functions synchronised and shown at the centre of the two-tone sunray blue dial. This version in steel with date display is a limited edition of 250 pieces.

Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa GMT - 42mm

Named after Luna Rossa – Panerai’s partner and challenger for the 36th America’s Cup – this GMT watch draws on a new material by the name of Scafotech™ – an innovative and sustainable composite that is made from recycled carbon fibre residue from the hull and hydrofoils of the Italian team’s AC75 yacht. Transformed into a high-tech polymer, it is used to manufacture the dial of the watch.

Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda GT steel

The Tonda GT and Tondagraph GT make up Parmigiani Fleurier’s offering of sport-luxe watches for a wider public. Shown here in steel, with a large date display and small seconds on a white guilloché dial, the Tonda GT is fitted with Calibre PF044, an automatic movement that delivers 45 hours of power reserve. Piaget Polo S green

When Piaget introduced the Polo S in 2016, it also introduced steel to its collections. Part round, part cushion-shaped, the 42mm case is mounted on an integrated steel bracelet, which puts this Polo S firmly in the immensely popular sport-luxe category. For added glamour, Piaget has come up with an eye-catching green dial with horizontal guilloché stripes. Hour markers and hands, in gold, are highlighted with SuperLuminova™.

Purnell Escape II Carbon

Tourbillons and nothing but tourbillons is the philosophy behind Purnell – confirmed by this Escape II in carbon. The cages of the two spherical tri-axial tourbillons or “Spherions” rotate in opposite directions at the incredibly high speeds of once every 8, 16 and 30 seconds. Behind this technical tour de force and world-first is master watchmaker Eric Coudray at TEC Ebauches.

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Superbia

Roger Dubuis proves that nothing succeeds like excess with this Excalibur Superbia. Made from palladium-enriched white gold, it is encrusted with white diamonds and blue sapphires. Beneath this jewelled exterior is the RD108SQ double flying tourbillon calibre – a new iteration of the first movement, introduced in 2005, to feature two regulators connected by a differential. Each of the 600 stones is cut into a tetrahedron with triangular facets then invisibly set on the flange, bezel, case and crown.
